Welcome New Band Members!

We are so glad that you are going to be a part of the Seminole High School Band, the second largest high school band in the state of Florida! Please explore this website and get a sense of the music proficiency, hard work, fun and belonging that is so much a part of what is waiting for you here at Seminole High School Band. Our band students are well represented on the Homecoming Court, Mr. and Ms. Seminole contests and National Honor Society -- music really IS cool at Seminole!

SURE we work hard and SURE we put on a great half-time show. But we are not about "Motivation, Dedication, Discipline" all the time. See photos of the different facets of band life here.

You are coming into Seminole High School Band at a great time. We moved into our new beautiful performing arts building in 2008, and the band got new marching and concert uniforms in 2009. We've earned the highest ratings for our marching band, Jazz Chiefs and Wind Ensemble, and our ensemble and soloists did very well in District and State performances. Plus many of our students are selected for the All-County Honors Band and All-State Honors Band. Videos and photos of almost everything are posted on Shutterfly -- take a look!

Questions, questions! We know that you have a lot of questions about high school band, marching season and placement in Concert/Symphonic/Wind Ensemble.  We've got lots of ways to answer these questions

  1. A special newsletter for you
  2. Information at this website and through the photos and videos of the band posted on Shutterfly.
  3. You are welcome to email either of the band directors (more effective than calling), or contact any of the parents on the current board. All the names and contact info is on the Contact Us page.
  4. Closer to August, you will be able to sign up for the band's email list. We will send you emails asking for chaperones and periodically inform you of important band news.
  5. Information about Band Camp is located on the Band Camp page.

Room for parents? We know many of you are looking for a way to be involved with your student now that they will be in high school, and band is the place. Odds are your student is going to be in the band for 4 years. We've got a very strong parent organization in place, and many ways for parents to get involved in ways that fit your interests and hours that fit your schedule. For most of the current parents, band is how we've chosen to stay involved in our student's high school education, and we have a lot of fun supporting the band directors.

Serving as a Dividend School Volunteer is a volunteer activity. In order for you to be able to volunteer as a chaperone or to help in any Band Parent Association activity that allows you to come in contact with students you MUST register prior to being eligible. To register visit this link.

Band dues: First-year marchers: $250. This includes continuity clothes, a black band polo, marching shoes, gloves, flipfolder etc. You will be filling out a "Continuity Form" with all the right sizes.

Returning marchers: $200.
Instrument rental: $50 per semester.

Band dues can be paid in two ways:

  1. In full on Registration Night
  2. Pay half on Registration Night (Registration Night is scheduled within the first couple weeks of school).

While band is an optional activity, we want every student to be able to afford to participate. If you have special financial issues, please contact Board Treasurer-Student Accounts, Michele Wawoe, as soon as possible via email or at (407) 488-7730. She will work confidentially with you to make arrangements.

What students will need for marching season: A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, a big water container or a camelback, socks and covered shoes. Students will be issued a T-shirt and shorts that they will wear under their band uniforms on Fridays. (This is called "continuity wear.") Band practice is two days a week after school, and students are typically asked to wear white T-shirts with shorts. This helps the band directors see the formations on the field more clearly. T-shirts do not have to be plain white, and students can change into band practice clothes after school.

Our school colors are orange and black, so you might want to start gathering accessories in those colors for pep rallies on Fridays. Band parents typically wear the band T-shirt that comes free with their BPA dues or purchase a "Seminole Band Parent" black polo,  and deck out in orange/black accessories -- earrings, beads, ribbons, hats, even shoes! Time to have fun while supporting the band!
